SSAS – Relational VS. Multidimensional Databases

Relational databases is a multi-billion-dollar industry. These databases support the everyday functioning of a huge number of companies with business-critical applications that store and analyze data with reliability and precision. The online transaction processing (OLTP) systems provide reliable, precise information and permanent, consistent access to that information.

But OLTP systems are not very suited to analyzing data. Online analytic processing (OLAP) systems are designed specifically for analysis, they don’t need to both read and write data. All that is needed for analysis is reading data. One of the most successful solutions to the problem of analyzing large amounts of data is multidimensional databases. While there is no limitation on the number of dimensions in Analysis Services, multiple hierarchies provide another key to greater complexity.
